What to know about AEO

Transparency, pitfalls, realistic expectations.

This page is for anyone considering an AEO consultant. The goal is to help you make an informed decision — even if you ultimately choose someone else. If you have any question, send us an email and we will reply in writing.

1. What is AEO and why now

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about how your business appears in the answers of generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot. It is similar to classical SEO, which targets Google search results, but with important differences.

In the Hungarian market during 2024–2025 we reached the point where people regularly use AI for finding service providers and professionals, not just Google. For private healthcare searches, our estimate is that 25–35% of the 25–50 age group now first asks an AI (ChatGPT, Gemini) for recommendations, and only then searches Google. This share is growing rapidly and varies by industry.

Classical SEO partially covers this audience (Gemini also relies on Google results), but not completely. ChatGPT and Perplexity build from entirely different signals. AEO is therefore a separate discipline — it is built alongside classical SEO, not as a replacement.

2. What determines whether AI recommends you

Several layers determine this, and each one matters.

The model's training data. Large AI models (GPT, Gemini, Claude) learned from vast amounts of text. Businesses that were already well-known and well-documented at training time are handled with more confidence. If your practice has mentions in 5 sources, the model cites you far more accurately than a practice with 0–1 mentions. This changes slowly: a large AI model is retrained annually or even less frequently.

Real-time web search. ChatGPT (via Bing) and Gemini (via Google) also run a fresh web search at answer time. Here, classical SEO (Google ranking) directly matters. Who ranks high on Google has a better chance of appearing in Gemini too.

Structured data (Schema.org). Invisible labels placed on your website that tell the AI what this business is. For a dental practice: name, address, phone, opening hours, dentists, services, prices, reviews. Without these the AI can only guess the details — which leads to inaccuracies. Well-structured data is one of the most reliable signals for AI.

Off-site signals. Mentions on other websites and platforms. Google Business Profile is the most important, alongside industry aggregators, Wikipedia, press appearances and review platforms. The more trusted sources contain consistent information about you, the more confidently AI cites you.

Consistency. AI is sensitive to whether your business name, address and phone number appear differently on your website, Facebook, Google Business Profile and industry directories. This is called NAP inconsistency (Name-Address-Phone) and makes AI uncertain about whether to identify you — it would rather not cite you than give incorrect information.

Competitor presence. AI often compares: whoever carries more signals gets into the “top 3 recommended”. AEO is always relative — your position is not good or bad in absolute terms, but relative to your competitors.

3. What we cannot guarantee

We clarify this upfront. Many disappointments arise when a provider — us or anyone else — does not speak openly about this.

“Top 1 in ChatGPT” is not guaranteeable. Generative AI answers vary from run to run— the same question in the same window can produce a different result two minutes later. Personalisation, context and model updates all affect this. Anyone promising “guaranteed top 1” either does not understand the technology or is deliberately misleading you.

The timeline cannot be guaranteed to the day.Signals appearing in AI systems takes 1–3 months — for the training data layer up to 6–12 months. Anyone promising “results within 30 days” either refers only to the easy fixes (Schema.org, GBP — these are indeed fast) or is overpromising.

Equal performance across all AI systems is not guaranteeable. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot weight signals differently. After implementation, Gemini may improve strongly, Perplexity moderately, ChatGPT only slightly. This is normal, and we communicate it in advance.

A specific number of new patients or clients is not guaranteeable. AI visibility is visibility. How much of that converts depends on many factors: your website quality, your reviews, your pricing, the competition. We provide ROI estimates on the Services page, but promising exact new-patient numbers or a specific timeline would be irresponsible.

We cannot guarantee that a competitor won't overtake you. If your competitor also does AEO work, the relative position can change. This is exactly why monthly monitoring matters — not just a one-time implementation.

4. What we actually do

After the list of negatives, it is worth clarifying what we actually promise:

We provide a diagnosis. A structured audit gives a precise picture of how your business currently performs across the four major AI systems, which signals are missing or weak, and what could be improved. This is valuable knowledge in itself — even if you do nothing else afterwards.

We improve signals that are proven to matter. Schema.org structured data, a fully completed Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, a review campaign, industry aggregator registration, FAQ content — all of these demonstrably influence AI visibility. The implementation carries these out, and the 60–90 day re-measurement shows how much the position changed.

We provide continuous measurement and monitoring. We run 60 prompts per month across all four AI systems, documented, using the same methodology. This shows what changes, what improves, where further work is needed. This is the content of the Monthly Care package.

We provide competitor monitoring. If a competitor gains a new signal (e.g. major press coverage, new aggregator listing), we see this in time and can react.

5. Pitfalls — what to avoid in the market

AEO is a new field in Hungary, and that is exactly what attracts questionable providers. A few specific pitfalls worth avoiding:

“Just rebranded SEO”.Many classical SEO agencies in 2025–2026 are renaming their service to “AEO” without changing their methodology. Classical SEO is valuable, but it is not the same thing. Ask directly: “What Schema.org types do you use for the dental segment? How do you test ChatGPT and Perplexity — beyond Bing?” If the answer is vague, they have simply relabelled their service.

Guaranteed outcome promises. If someone promises “guaranteed #1 in ChatGPT” or “50% more clients in 30 days,” that is a red flag. A serious professional does not guarantee results — because they know they cannot.

Large agency pricing for small businesses. A 1–3 person dental practice does not need a 200,000+ HUF/month AEO package — the ROI simply does not work out. Anyone charging that much for a micro-practice either does not understand the market or is exploiting a lack of awareness.

“Turnkey AI content”.Uploading AI-generated blog posts under the label “AI content strategy” often hurts AEO positioning. Major search engines recognise mass AI content and penalise it. Good AEO content is specific, professional, authentic — often written jointly with the client or based on their expertise.

Long contracts for micro-businesses. Anyone asking a 2-person practice for a 24-month contract in exchange for a 5% discount is not a partner. Realistic commitment at micro level is 6 months, at SME level 12 months maximum.

Fake reviews. Some “AEO consultants” purchase fake Google reviews or aggregator ratings. This improves the numbers short-term but results in penalties from Google long-term (review removal, profile suspension) and is ethically unacceptable. Anyone doing this is a risk, not a consultant.

6. What to expect from a serious AEO consultant

If you are seriously considering this service — from us or anyone else — these are the minimum standards worth demanding:

Written methodology. The consultant should be able to show what steps they take in an audit, what signals they examine, how they score. If the methodology is vague, it probably does not exist.

Measurable before/after. There should be a baseline measurement before implementation and a re-measurement at 30/60/90 days after on the same questions. Without this, you cannot prove that you received anything for your money.

Transparent pricing. If the answer is “request a quote” and the number only emerges after lengthy negotiation, that is a warning sign. Serious service packages should have pricing that is publicly visible in advance.

Accountability. The Terms of Service should clearly state: what is committed to, what is not committed to, on what timeline, and what the liability limitation is. If they are evasive about the ToS, the contract is problematic.

Exit option. For monthly retainers, there should be a monthly cancellation option after the initial mandatory period (typically 6 months). A “can never exit” type contract creates dependency.

Data protection. If they handle your data (business data, AI testing results), GDPR compliance must be committed to. A Data Processing Notice and records are required.

Own AEO presence. Anyone offering AEO consulting but who does not themselves appearin ChatGPT for “AEO consultant Hungary” evidently does not believe in their own service. Test the consultant on their own service.

7. When NOT to hire us

A few concrete situations where it does not make sense to approach us:

If you want fast, guaranteed AI top placement. We do not offer this, and anyone who promises it is misleading you. If this is your goal, you are in the wrong place.

If you do not yet have a basic website. AEO strengthens an existing digital presence. If you only have a Facebook page, a website comes first — that is a web developer's job, not ours.

If you cannot or do not want to use Google Business Profile. GBP is one of the central pillars of local service AEO in Hungary. If this is excluded for any reason, the impact of AEO implementation will be severely limited.

If you do not have 30 minutes per month for feedback. During implementation and monthly maintenance we need your input (introducing a new specialist, photos, refining service descriptions). If this does not fit into your monthly schedule, implementation stalls.

If your Google Reviews average is below 4.0. Our prerequisite for AEO work is that the business genuinely provides value to its clients. A below-4.0 average signals that the underlying service quality needs attention first — AEO on top of that would only paper over the problem. We mean this as a professional boundary, not a value judgment.

If you view it as “I'll spend 200k HUF/month and it pays back in 1 year.” AEO is continuous work whose ROI typically materialises over 6–18 months, non-linearly. If you are chasing short-term returns, you will likely be disappointed.

8. How to verify us before paying

Do not take our word for it. Two things to check:

1. Test our own AEO. Ask ChatGPT: “Who does AEO in Hungary?” If our name does not appear, you have every right to ask: why trust us to help you? (Our goal is to appear there within 6–12 months.)

2. Read our methodology. The complete audit process is published step by step. If the methodology holds up professionally, that is a meaningful signal.

If anything is unclear, let us know. Our market position is built on transparency.
